Hey there, Fam!
I’ve made a decision that’s been on my mind for a while now, and I couldn’t be more passionate about it. As we step into 2025, I am fully committed to embracing and promoting being a conscious consumer. This isn’t a new concept, but it’s incredibly relevant today, especially for us women, given our significant purchasing power.
Women—whether black, Asian, minority, or white—hold tremendous economic influence. This influence extends beyond just our wallets; it encompasses our political power, our voting power, and our collective voice. It’s crucial that we harness all of this power to effect positive change.
Why Women Must Lead the Charge in Conscious Consumerism
As a diversity practitioner, it’s evident to me that women, particularly white women, have reaped substantial benefits from Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs and affirmative action. These programs have historically helped women more than any other demographic. Therefore, the discontinuation of such programs would first and foremost impact white women.
Given this context, it’s essential that all women—not just those from minority groups—become intentional, mindful, and strategic about our purchasing decisions. We cannot overlook the brands we support and their commitment (or lack thereof) to DEI and affirmative action.
How to Be a Conscious Consumer
Conscious consumerism means prioritizing brands and corporations that uphold ethical practices, environmental sustainability, and strong DEI frameworks. Here’s how you can get started:
- Research Brands: Before making a purchase, investigate if the brand has active DEI or affirmative action programs. If they don’t, consider redirecting your money to those who do.
- Use Technology: I’ve found an app called “Goods” to be particularly useful. This tool shows which brands support your preferred political parties and ideological stances. It’s a simple yet effective way to ensure your spending aligns with your values.
- Evaluate Ethical Standards: Look into the environmental and sustainability practices of brands. Assess their leadership teams—do they represent minorities and women? Do they invest back into communities, especially those supporting women?
My 2025 Commitment: Support Women and Minority Labels
In 2025, I’m significantly reducing my spend on well-known designer labels. Instead, I’m choosing to support women and minority-owned brands. Celebrities like Beyoncé, who promote minority-owned companies like Telfar, set a strong example. It’s vital for those in the public eye to be conscious of the brands they endorse and ensure these brands give back to the communities they care about.
Your Turn: Make Your Voice Heard
I challenge you, as we move forward into 2025, to think about your purchasing power. How can you use it to support brands that align with your values and amplify the voices of women?
Let’s make sure that every dollar we spend in 2025 speaks volumes about who we are and what we stand for.
I’d love to hear how you’re planning to be a conscious consumer in 2025. Share your strategies, and let’s make our collective voice heard!
